Roof Streaking Mold Stains and Mildew

Does your roof have the cone like black stains that widened as they get closer to the gutter? This roof streaking is actually a live organism called Gloeocapsa magma which is a species of cyanobacteria airborne bacteria which is also a host for other molds, fungus, mildews, and moss’s. This bacterium is spread from house to house by wind, birds, and squirrels. It is primarily found on the north cooler and sometimes more shaded side of your roof.
Prior to the 1970’s, asphalt shingles were made of heavy felt paper made from asphalt impregnated cotton rags which absorbed petroleum based liquid asphalt making them last up to 30 years. The energy crises in the 70 have made the petroleum products more expansive. Additionally, the introduction of polyester fabrics caused the cotton rag market to shrink and so the roof scientists developed fiberglass mats and thus fiberglass shingles were born. Unfortuanly, the fiberglass did not absorb as much asphalt as the older asphalt shingle and so the early fiberglass shingle were very light and failed, which of coarse lead to some lawyers class action lawsuit. The roof scientists decided to add weight to these new fiberglass shingles by adding powdered limestone. It worked, because the resulting shingles were heavier, stronger and did not fail like their earlier fiberglass versions.
Everybody knows you can’t build a better mouse trap. The roof scientists found out that limestone a sedimentary rock composed of the mineral calcite also known as calcium carbonate which is composed of marine organisms that settled to the bottom of the ocean several hundred thousand years ago is now Bacteria and mold food. So now, we have over one hundred million homes with roof streaking.
This bacteria, mold mildew, and fungus does some damage to the surface roof shingles granualars causing them to slightly lower the roof shingle life, however more damage is done to people who fall off the roof cleaning this stuff. These roof climbers are the people who suffer from PWS “Perfect World Syndrome” and are the same people who have chemical trucks spraying chemicals on their green lawns, are peopel who turn on loud leaf blowers on Sundays when the rest of us are tying to have aquit peaceful backyard pick-nick.
The rich people with PWS Perfect World Syndrome do not climb roofs but instead hire a new bread of roof mold cleaning contractors who drag their water blasting pressure washing hoses across the delicate fragile roof shingles while spraying their green secrete formula mold, bacteria and probably bird killing chemicals. Who Knows, maybe these chemical will alter Squirrel DNA permitting them to grow six foot in size, so instead of ending their normal squirrel life by being squished by a soccer moms car tire, will now be able to TRAMPLE AND SQUISH the soccer moms car.
Ok so some of the skinny non roof falling GOOD BALANCE roof mold professional contractors use low water pressure THAT DOES NOT DAMAGE THE ROOF and chemicals that PROBABLY ARE safe , the bottom line, is it will still cost 400-600 dollars to remove this roof streaking. This is money you can spend on additional attic ventilation, gutter cleaning, chimney pointing or even can applied to your next roof. Buy the way, they are starting to make shingles that contain metals such as Zink, and copper that will should no longer permit the bacteria, mold, and mildew to grow on rooftops. Some companies sell Zink metal strips the you can nail to the upper portion of the roof that kills the roof bacterium and mold. Expect maybe now the sun will reflect light off these Zink metal strips that may melt your neighbors vinyl siding and even possibly blinds a few pilots causing overhead airplane collisions.
